I think the "Old Flags" ( MapDot-, D&I-, E&L-, F&W-, H&Y-, I&P-, J&S-, K&H-, L&R- ) are clever, mnemonic (see below) and they accord with our "Classification code" "library-shelf" sequence and can be useful -- you can use them if you like. However, perhaps they confuse new visitors to this Web-site. You may find vestiges of that protocol on my pages. But I am bringing in a revised protocol which also accords with the "Classification code", i.e., "Category", and is used to sort the penfriend seekers and ideas exchangers according to their major "talking-point".

SUBJECT-KEYWORDS are usually in upper case/enhanced to catch your eye; the new "flags" and classification codes are in lower case.

Here are the new flags

Other details used in penpal list:

A:(ge) b.(orn) f(emale) m(ale) L:(anguages)

(learning)-E:(xperience/education) W:(ish/want)

Pref:(er) (e)X:(change) R:(emark/Personal Ambition)

Be brief, clear in your letter to editor of the penpal list:

com:n .. }=a is score for communication / understanding of instructions;

vibe:n}=a is intuitive [subjective (?)] score for good-vibes.

Abbreviations evolved from worldwide penfriend zines eg, Allelographia Worldwide, Signal International, Amity.

L:(anguages)
I like to facilitate communication in any language participants prefer. But I publish only in English, which standardizes searches. And I ask all to write to me only in English.
For the L- field, please, you name the languages you use, in order of preference for this project. If you omit, it is assumed you will use English!
The 3-char. abbreviations PTSSL sometimes uses are from Library of Congress, MARC Formats.... Participants are not expected to know them: they are obvious in context. They are not "history-subculture-9a" (E&L) Categories.

Ask Friends and Associates to Join In:

Urge subject-focused friends to send details, especially for a touristy place with a cultural aspect (City&Touristy Cultural aspect), eg, London esp-theatre...

Or Industry&Process with a viewpoint, eg, tourism development v-natural resource management...

They do not have to live there (or work in the industry); they should mention in a sentence or two - as a footnote - why they know /love this subject of focus, eg, Subject of Focus: `mapdot-city-35bd9b-ITALY esp-South of Rome, Footnote: "My parents were born in Naples"

[ Editor's Intro: As volunteer on collective for Learning Exchange community newspaper, I used to compile a monthly penfriend column. This list extends the idea. I try to issue a refreshed improved edition each equinox and solstice, which I give away as freeware to shareware distributors at various computer-swap meets around Melbourne. The penfriend zine on disk is Penpal Tourist Guide a portable document file in Envoy(Win) and BigText(DOS) formats. I'm now "playing" with HTML and this version for WWW, viz, F-C-K: Flagged-Categorized-Keywords -- with demo Penpal Tourist Subject-Sorted List. Listed participants are mainly respondents to my exchange-ad (X-ad) in a motley of o'seas penpal club "hardcopy" zines; they are "extra-mural", many are "3rd-World", many do not have access to WWW, there are even some inmates of prisons, social isolates or such. Snobs, proceed with caution. I anticipate more self-selecting educated and idealist participants to submit details by email -- which I invite you to do:

PLEASE BE CO-OPERATIVE: EDITORIAL

Dear Prospective Participant:

WELCOME! Welcome to Penpal Tourist Subject-Sorted Lists. Welcome to this side of my project. Be a "book" or "reader" in my "library". Help me demonstrate the other side of my project, namely, the usefulness of Flagged-Categorized-Keywords and the touristy mapdot. I do hope you're just the right kind of person to contribute to, and gain from, extramural opportunity and international understanding. And new contacts -- in a spirit of Peace!

I ask you to choose one major subject -- or two focus subjects -- for ideas exchange. You already should have experience, information, knowledge or opinion to share on the subject. It helps me if you state your Flag-Category-Keywords, or latitude and longitude of chosen touristy mapdot. Do share your travel experience at a city or other place as your F-C-K talking point. Or tell others about the region you live in and love! Or perhaps a year in history!

Please be co-operative with MY project and with contacts you initiate and with a reasonable number of participants who write to you. At first try to reply politely with interesting comment, saying if you do not intend to continue correspondence. Later, if you happen to receive more than you can handle, you may ignore, unless particularly relevant to you. Remember to write to me to ask to be removed (free) or to have your details changed (small donation welcome). Don't pass on other people's addresses unless they ask you to do so.

I am the Editor, I have the right to slant your submission of details to suit the project. You are not buying ad space from me. Neither are the other participants a commodity. This is not a meat-market for "mail-order bridegrooms" or such. ( Don't expect me to publish your "race", colour or "vital statistics", unless unusual. ) ( However, I am sympathetic to participants who, as a spin-off, hope to find a life-partner. My own parents met in Worldwide Adventure Magazine penpal column. UK<==>NZ ) This project is SUBJECT FOCUSED: it assumes you have knowledge, ideas or experience you are able and willing to communicate.

You do not have to be a resident of a CITY, mapdot or TOURIST SITE to know or love it. You do not have to work in an INDUSTRY or JOB to know it well. (Job seekers are encouraged to exchange information in a spirit of co-operation rather than of competition.) You do not have to read and write a LANGUAGE to know and love its cultural aspects. You do not have to be formally qualified in a SUBJECT to have innovative ideas to share.

Firstly, I treat you as a resource person with knowledge to share and cultivate rather than "take". I sort of play amateur librarian on my computer with the listed participant details. Be a book on my shelf.

Secondly, and lastly, you might think of possible benefits to yourself. What kind of contact do you prefer (not demand). Do you have a Wish, Aim or Ambition; or special Remark. If this were a classified advertisement publication, your purposes might be served by placing you in the appropriate section. I use one-letter tags for this secondary classification (see following).
[ Also see : PROMPT SHEET AdClass]

Which "AdClass" code could I, the editor, end-tag your details with?

I decide, but you may make a suggestion or name your Purpose:-

}=t: TravelMinded; tourist-experience; culture of place; expatriate-experience; culture of language/ethnicity; biography; year-in-history; backpacker-experience

}=s: Industry; Profession; Study of..; SeriousSubject

}=v: Issues&Opinion (Conventional or eccentric creative views welcome, if you respect the opinions of others) (Humour appreciated in Melbourne, home of Comedy Festival)

}=x: Info&Referral; swap items; eXchange

}=n: single women who boldly seek mariage-minded men or other singles of either gender for mutual legal "relationship" (You indicate your preference); lonely-hearted women [honesty is your responsibility]

}=m: single men who boldly seek marriage-minded women or other singles of either gender for mutual legal "relationship" (You indicate your preference); lonely-hearted men [honesty is your responsibility]

}=p: pals; non-specific friendship (don't say "just a housewife", or "student" without stating subject)

}=k: twee schoolkids who seek schoolkids exclusively (Why not try a supervised Korean after-school club...via their embassy?)

}=c: commercial; MO; bulk collectors (I avoid and don't expect me to carry ads with prices)

}=b: banished: dubious; chain letters; money scams; sexploitation; reported cheats; hostile nutters; persons with unclear addresses: = WastePaperBasket

(AdClass Tags ranked by priority of treatment - approx reverse order sort!) [ Also see : PROMPT SHEET AdClass]

"A Work of Art is in the Nature of a Gift..."

Please tell others, at no cost to me, about this creative endeavor. Perhaps pin up Penfriend Tourist Subject-Sorted Lists notice or prompt sheet at library... campus... ethnic club... tourist office... backpacker hostel... senior citizens' hang-out... your Web site...

I Ask Especially Persons Who Write to me...

I want literate imaginative respondents who comprehend what the notice asks of them. Unfortunately, some, esp. from Third World, get my address and beg, flatter, bless or pray with empty words: they ignore the content of my notice. Maybe I'm old and grumpy; I give "clueless" letters a low score! Be easy to read, esp NAME and ADDRESS: your name, address and handwriting are strange to me, but your brain has been trained to read them. Be brief and to the point.

You pre-edit your text. Yet a Footnote of a few sentences explaining yourself, your subject of focus and your interesting source of information would help me from becoming bored in this labour of love. Therapy for a solitary old batchelor; skill maintenance/development. Participants of higher general intelligence [What's that?] are wanted. So are average persons really dedicated to their enthusiasm/subject. Be specific: don't say "music"; name the instrument you play. I reach out to less wealthy participants excluded from Internet etc..

Yes, ideas for improvement, and report of results, fruitful or disappointing are welcome. (Don't anticipate my reply, unless you are very co-operative with help for the project.) Don't be boot-lickingly polite/manipulative; but don't be hostile or rude; be open and honest. I don't expect perfect grammar; I do expect you to use an English dictionary. Sorry that I ask all to write to me in hegemonic English (In my youth, I studied some Esperanto.). However, you can state the L- you prefer to correspond in with contacts.

Thanks for reading this. I make and change policy. Don't be anxious about breaking my rules -- unless it's illegal.. Let's be experimental.. Try me. No promises. Step outside the box.

A submission to me is a test! Good Luck! Try, even if confused!
