What is a mapdot?

A mapdot is a specific small area of the world surface. A mapdot is a trapezoidal rectangle. A mapdot is located from its South-East corner. (Author Comment: Don't round up excess decimal places; do truncate, when converting from latitude and longitude to mapdot geocode. I reckon there are 3268865 mapdots.) The dimensions of the mapdot are 10.5min longitude East to West and 5min latitude South to North. The size of mapdot-14b01e-Singapore is 19km East to West by 10km South to North, i.e., 190km2. The size of mapdot-02c575-Melbourne is 16km East to West by 10km South to North, i.e., 160km2. (Author Comment: The world surface is of a slightly oblate spheroid globe; yet it is commonly stretched and flattened via Mercator's Projection to represent on maps)

What is MapDot Protocol?

MapDot Protocol is a classification system for Web-pages. MapDot Protocol is a metadata, meta-data, system of classification for Person-to-Person (P2P) subject-focussed Web-pages. It produces a string of characters in a sort-order, so you can flag where your Web-page with knowledge to share on one subject should be located in a notional cyber-space, digital-space, library-shelf. Each basic mapdot geocode focuses on a city or touristy geographic location. The flag can be extended with a code for a period in history or industry or field of study or job-skill or hobby. The MapDot Protocol flag is geospacial metadata. (Author Comment: It's like the date-line -- city with date -- of an article by a foreign correspondent. The title is both data and metadata) MapDot Protocol can be adapted for other uses; but the MapDot Protocol sort-order must be maintained: in-house styles; databases; cataloguing collections, such as of photos; listing penfriends and non-commercial, non-hate, non-sexploitation, ideas exchangers; intranet.

A MapDot Protocol flag for your Web-page

Flag your personal Web-page with one only mapdot flag when the keyword represents the one major subject of focus or "talking point" of your Web-page or for yourself for person-to-person ideas exchange. Your Web-page is given a cyber-space classification like a book on a library-shelf. For example,
"mapdot-02c575-Melbourne" signals,
"Here is knowledge, ideas or life experience about Melbourne". Melbourne is a mapdot. The latitude and longitude coordinates of any city or tourist site can be converted to the basic MapDot Protocol geocode.

IMPORTANT ADVICE: Where to stick your flag

You must "fly" one only flag on a Web-page;
but you may "fly" a different flag on other pages;
you may stick your flag at several places on your page.

I suggest, if your focus is on Boston (say):-

<TITLE>.........mapdot-559e40-Boston</TITLE>

<META content="mapdot-559e40-Boston, ...." name=keywords>

<META content="........mapdot-559e40-Boston" name=description>

<META content="mapdot-559e40-Boston" name=mapdot>

The last "META" is on a "Build it and they will come" basis: "they" being search-engine robots and software developers! Please help.

In the body of text you may stick your flag in the plain text:-
...mapdot-559e40-Boston...
or in a Heading e.g.,

<H1>.........<br><font size=-2>subject classification: mapdot-559e40-Boston</font></H1> or

<H2>.........<br><font size=-2>subject classification: mapdot-559e40-Boston</font></H2>

Or at foot of Web-page, e.g.,
subject classification: mapdot-559e40-Boston</BODY>

Or at top of Web-page, like this page,
<BODY.....><font.........><font size=-2>Subject Classification: mapdot-559e40-Boston</font>

Note:
The "`-" in front of "mapdot-" is not used: that was for sorting purposes.
The longer prefixes, such as "history-date-" are not used: they were for instructional purposes.
Please use the plain "mapdot-".
(see top of this page)

It is better for you and this project if you choose one subject you find on another table with a yellow background,
such as: mapdot-55ce2a-Niagra-Falls; mapdot-66b270-Seattle; mapdot-8x9-1990's-CE; mapdot-9-f3-MALAY; mapdot-a113-vegetable-growing; mapdot-j839-computer-services; mapdot-n220-museums; mapdot-o622-trade-unions; mapdot-p2a-mathematics; mapdot-p95-ecology; mapdot-r24-garment-making; mapdot-s2a-architecture; mapdot-s3e-plumbing mapdot-y73-journalism; mapdot-]-793-partying
You, of course, use the plain prefix "mapdot-".

MapDot Protocol geocode extension for periods of history and years:
MapDot Protocol geocode in The Fourth Dimention

You can add another dimension to your mapdot flag thus:-
mapdot-02c575-8x-Melbourne-(1893-CE)
This can be read as,
"I have knowledge and ideas to exchange about Melbourne for the history period 1800 to 1899, especially the year 1893".

Go back to Table of Contents

MapDot Protocol extension code can swap with mapdot geocode

You can change the minor aspect of subject-focus to the major subject of your mapdot flag, thus:-
mapdot-8x-1893-CE-(Melbourne)
This can be read as,
"I have knowledge about the worldwide period in history 1800 to 1899, especially the year 1893-CE and especially Melbourne".
This swap would send you, like a book, to a different location in the cyber-space library shelf.

Table of MapDot Protocol codes for history periods

(Author Comment: The history periods are a standard set by the Library of Congress MARC Formats; here BC can be read as "Before Christ" or "Before Common Era", and CE as "Christian Era" or "Common Era". There are other calendars of course.)

[The Editor acknowledges Library of Congress MARC Formats chronological coverage categories]

You can use a precise Year as -Keyword
for example, you can replace
history-date-mapdot-8u-1600's-CE
with
history-date-mapdot-8u-1688-CE
or express it as an "(especially)"
history-date-mapdot-8u-1600's-CE-(1688-CE)

MapDot Protocol prefers controlled vocabulary and the standard keyword

When we conform to the standard and recommended keyword to flag our Web-pages, we will be grouped at a suitable cyber-library-shelf location. The Editor uses an Aussie-English spelling checker and dictionary.

Ways MapDot Protocol controls vocabulary

ANZIC and ASCED are controlled standards set by bureaux of statistics: both in the vocabulary and in the detailed definitions for industries and for fields of formal study.

Ways you can slant MapDot Protocol

An issue or topic for discussion can often be treated under several fields-of-study
A city can often be named historically or according to an ethnic group, instead of officially.
If the city is a capital-city, you can use the name of the country, state, province, shire, county etc..
If you are interested in a -[viewpoint] -- please use square brackets for viewpoint. This can slant your topic as you choose. But in these times of post-modernism, deconstructionism, ideological spin and sound-bites, "code-words" invite -[satire]. Likewise, we construct viewpoints for touristy sites or monuments, and for years and places remembered: nostalgia is a powerful "drug"!

HOW TO SLANT YOUR MAPDOT FLAG

A topic can be treated under several subject-fields; and from different -[viewpoints]:-
Maybe the viewpoint in -[...] is your viewpoint -- or maybe not -- yet you have ideas to discuss.
Or go externally for catalogue of topics at: www.mapdot.info/topics.htm. You can choose a MapDot Protocol classification to suit. Or "reverse engineer" to slant for your subject!

The mapdot zone-block has the same South-East corner as the mapdot at that corner
but the zero at the third position of the geocode string is changed to a "g" thus:-
mapdot-350000 changes to

A major river system, or transport route, or geographical region which features in a zone-block can be located there. The third position of the geocode string is a "g", followed by three zero's.

How mapdot geocode is calculated

HOW MAPDOT PROTOCOL Converts Geographic Coordinates to a Sequence [Feel free to use or publish.]

MapDot Protocol gives a "library-shelf" location for every mapdot on Planet Earth. These locations come first in the Flag-Category-Keyword list of subjects of focus.

  • MapDot Protocol follows The Sun through 8 zones East to West

  • Each zone is divided into 8 blocks South to North
    ( The dividers are: antarctic/arctic circles, 45 degree parallels, tropics, equator. The whole antarctic and arctic are appended as blocks to the "Early Day Zone" )

  • The blocks are divided into 16 by 16 and so on.. in hexadecimal numeration. This project uses a string of 6 characters; but the string could be longer ad lib..

  • The grid co-ordinates, as alphanumerics, are interlaced for sequence

mapdot size for category of 6 characters is a slightly trapezoidal rectangle of approx 10.5 min longitude by 5 min latitude. (At mapdot-02c575-Melbourne the mapdot is approx 16 km by 10 km; the mapdot for a category of 7 characters would be 1 km by 10 km.. for 8 char 1 km by 0.625 km and so on, ad lib.) mapdot co-ordinates are at its S-E corner. (Author Comment: Don't round up excess decimal places; do truncate, when converting from latitude and longitude to mapdot geocode; and it's nicer to work from degrees in decimal form. MapDot Protocol unites the fourth, the third, the second and the first dimension into a first dimension for a library-shelf sequence.)
NOTE: Converting Longitude and Latitude co-ordinates to mapdot geocode can be done by hand or by spreadsheet etc. eg, Quatro Spreadsheet Geographic Coordinates to MapDot Protocol (59Kb download). Help! Any of youse guys -- m. or f. -- like to offer to do a spreadsheet for another program? Or a client-side HTML page using JavaScript?
MapDot Protocol Applications: to index databases with "geocode"; to select and sort; to list location-focused items in a "library-shelf" sequence; to flag a blog or personal Web-page with a rendezvous keyword in text and meta-tag...
Methods for finding adjacent mapdots can be devised. Concatenated region blocks can be selected using MapDot_Protocol. MapDot_Protocol is a find-select-n-sortable character-string, not a quantity; however, it is a classification system with "controlled vocabulary". It can be useful to attach a code from another "dimention" classification for especial chronological era, year or cultural aspect, eg, "mapdot-02c605-8w8-Glenrowan-(1880)"; "mapdot-1437f0-y22-Cebu-(music)".

For worldwide place name co-ordinates, Getty TGN can help (This is helpful because historical names are also given);
for Aussie place names, Geoscience Australia;
but first try:-

How you flag your Web-page with a mapdot geocode

Go up page to IMPORTANT ADVICE

Go back to Table of Contents

The flag is short, logical, easy to read and interpret

The geocode has eight characters, which is about the limit to remember without techniques.
The first character can be interpreted as the zone for the location
The second character can be interpreted as the block within the zone for the location
The geocode could be a little shorter if we used the full alphabet, but that would be a problem for humans to read and sort. Logical?

The sort-order of the rest of the classification code is also logical and can be read. You may care to remember some ranges
locations range: from 00 to 76 (geographic sites)
7ww-g71b (backpacking) and 7ww-xpat (expatriate) global-7[- (World's surface, global institutions, trans-nationals, noosphere)
history range: from 8- (archaeology sites) to 8a (BC) to 8e (CE) to 8z (the future) to 8[biog (persons real and imagined) and 8[loci (places real and imagined)
9 (languages as history subculture literature or ethnicity)
a to f (primary industry and manufacturing) g to n (shopping and personal goods use) o (personal services providers and use)
p to z (job-skill or field of serious study practice or profession) Logical! QED?

Table of MapDot Protocol codes for languages as history subculture, literature or ethnicity

Select the LANGUAGE or Language Family for the Ethnic Group or Literature you know well:-

Prefix with "history-subculture" flag, H&L flag or no flag -- which does not break the sort-order
If you know the LANGUAGE by another name, you may choose that as your keyword.

(Author Comment: It's a shame for humanity that often close language families fight each other; even the same language with a different script. The Semitic; SERBO-CROATIAN; HINDI-URDU. The fault-line between Constantinople and Rome! Viewpoint: bookish philology rather scientific linguistics.)

You can adapt MapDot Protocol for other purposes

In-House-style:-
As demonstrated in Penfriend Tourist Subject-Sorted Lists, the mapdot flag and classification code are in lower case and the keywords (Separated with "-" until a space) are in CAPS (A word-processor macro can do this) The editor reserves the right to edit or exclude submissions.
The pattern and order of keywords can be prompted by a fill-in data form.
MapDot Protocol can be adapted for other uses; but the MapDot Protocol sort-order must be maintained: in-house styles; databases; collections, such as of photo catalogues; penfriend lists and non-commercial, non-hate, non-sexploitation, ideas exchangers; intranet.
As with this Web-page, you may like to use the longer prefix, e.g., "history-archaeology", for your mapdot classification system; but here, it is for instruction. You must use the simple "mapdot" as prefix to flag your Web-page
For an in-house database you could use nemonic abbreviations. such as:-
C&T B&H E&S G&I H&A H&D H&F H&L H&R I&P J&S K&H
These nemonic abbreviations conform with the sort-order

The Editor is Sorry
As at Feb 2008, there are vestiges of earlier versions on this Web-site -- and even stray pages -- that do not conform with this main MapDot Protocol page. Also, a few flags are duplicated and out of order: this is to not break old links. Evolution.
Also, Dear Reader, you may find some of the text in the sky-blue background sections overwritten: that is to flag search-engine robots. Do scan for info that you need; but you probably can find in the yellow background tables a MapDot Protocol flag for your focus-subject. Maybe do a "Find".

This entirely new rewrite done passionately by the author in the face of death; and encouragement from staff, good folk and good food at RMH and its Hostel; it feels like mapdot-x32-sociology-(field-work)-[participant-observer]. "Always look on the bright side..."

Uses for MapDot Protocol:-
MapDot Protocol is intended to flag Web-sites or individual personal Web-pages. The protocol was initially devised to list subject-focussed penfriends and ideas exchangers (Avoiding commercial advertising, bulk propaganda, hostility, hate or "sexploitation")

MapDot Protocol is also ideal for indexing databases, including, maybe, photo collections.

The focus subject is typically a CITY or "touristy"-site. This is the major KEYWORD, which ideally is from a "controlled vocabulary". The CITY/KEYWORD is prefixed by a mapdot "geocode", which is like a library-shelf classification sequence.

This geocode is generated following a method of converting and merging the latitude and longitude co-ordinates of any location on the world globe.

The geocode can be also suffixed with a period-of-history classification code (Or with a field-of-study or other standard code).

In-House-style:-
As demonstrated in his Penfriend Tourist Subject-Sorted Lists, the author, Bill Helem, likes the mapdot flag and classification code to be in lower case and the keywords (Separated with "-" until a space) to be in CAPS (A word-processor macro can do this)
The pattern and order of keywords can be prompted by a fill-in data form.

Mapdot Examples with Flag-Category-Keywords:-
mapdot-02c575-Melbourne
Comment: The "flag" is "mapdot-" The "category" is "02c575-" The category is like a library shelf classification. In this example it is the "mapdot geocode" for the unique mapdot area where Melbourne is located. The "keyword" is "-Melbourne". The keyword is best if in the Australian-English spelled version from a "controlled vocabulary"; place-names, their centres and area-boundaries are controlled by state-authority.

Because Melbourne is capital of the state of Victoria, the keyword can be changed to "-Victoria";
also the keyword can be changed to a touristy site located at the same mapdot area, e.g.,
"-Melbourne-Cricket-Ground"; or to a suburb-name, eg, "-South-Yarra"; or to the aboriginal regional name, e.g., "-Narrm-[Wurundjeri-Country]"

A typical mapdot pattern:-
mapdot-geocode-City Name-(especial interest)-(especially)-[viewpoint]

MapDot in History Examples with suffix:-
mapdot-02c575-8x-Melbourne-(1943) The "suffix category" is "-8x". It is like a library-shelf classification. In this case, it is for the historical period of the nineteen hundreds. The keyword means:-
"Melbourne especially 1943".

Closing Recapitulation on MapDot Protocol:-
Nations, states, countries can be "located" at the capital city mapdot, and mountain ranges at the highest peak.
The metropolis, country-name can be swapped with the city-name if that is your focus.
The code for a secondary classification can be swapped with the city code: a general period in history or industry or field of study or job-skill or hobby can become the major-focus.
Jobs, fields of study, professions, industries are in dynamic flux; bureaux of stats attempt to box them and concord with international standards. This project tries to use these "controlled vocabularies" as keywords.
This project hopes the protocol is personal-identity focussed but not for empty status pretensions.
Be brief, honest, but personal details are optional. Don't lie; we can't prove honesty; be wary! Show respect for other persons and their opinions. Discuss rather than debate.
Knowledge can be learned from life-experience, reading, family, travel, formal study.
You do not have to reside at a location, work in an industry or be "qualified" to have ideas to share -- but it helps if you do.
Nor do you have to have the -[viewpoint]- you are interested in. But you must have done your "homework". Good Luck! And be creative!
